JILI GAMES PK Betting: Reading a Pick'em Line

PK is short for pick'em: a spread of zero, with no favourite and no underdog.

JILI GAMES UFC Odds
UFC odds start with a two-way price on the winner, with a favourite shown as a minus number and an underdog as a plus number.
JILI GAMES MPBL Betting
MPBL odds come as three prices per game: a moneyline on the winner, a spread on the margin and a total on the combined score.

PK betting is betting on a line where the spread is zero. PK is short for pick’em, and the Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council glossary defines pick’em in traditional sports betting as an event with no favorite or underdog. Nobody gives points and nobody takes them: the side that finishes ahead wins the bet.

This page reads the line, settles it and sets it beside a moneyline. The wider picture of odds formats and markets is on the sports betting basics pillar, and the numbers below are labelled examples, not current prices.

What PK betting means on a line

A spread normally has two numbers, one negative and one positive. Wizard of Odds describes a point spread as a handicap given to the weaker team, or deducted from the stronger one. When the two sides are rated as equals, the number is zero, and the screen shows PK, PICK or 0.

What the line showsReadingFavourite
Team A -3.5, Team B +3.5Team A must win by 4 or moreTeam A
Team A PK, Team B PKWhoever wins, winsNone
Team A -0.5, Team B +0.5Same as PK, but a tie is not a pushTeam A

The third row is a common source of confusion. A half-point line removes the tie, so the bet never returns a stake: a tie loses for the side giving the half-point. A PK line keeps the tie as a live result.

Wikipedia’s Asian handicap page adds a football detail. A quarter-goal handicap can be written as 0 and ½, or as pk and ½, and the page says the pk there stands for pick-em.

How a pick’em spread is settled

Settlement follows the final result after the handicap is applied, and with a handicap of zero the final result is the result.

  1. Your side finishes ahead: the bet wins. At a decimal price of 1.91, a ₱100 stake returns ₱191, which is ₱91 of profit.
  2. Your side finishes behind: the bet loses, and the ₱100 stake is gone.
  3. The two sides finish level: the bet is a push. Wikipedia’s page on point spreads says that in a push the game is considered no action and no money is won or lost. The ₱100 stake comes back.

Which result counts matters as much as the maths. Some sportsbooks settle on regular time only and others include overtime. The settlement rules for that sport, found in the sportsbook’s help or rules section, state it. Read the line there before staking.

For example, a PK football line with a 1-1 final returns the stake. The same match on a moneyline with a draw outcome pays only the draw selection, so a bet on either team loses.

PK betting against a moneyline

Both markets ask which side wins. The difference sits in the tie and in the price.

Wikipedia’s Asian handicap page makes the same point from the other side. With traditional fixed odds, it says, a draw is treated as an additional outcome and bettors lose when they back either team and the game draws. A zero handicap removes that loss and returns the stake.

Basketball changes the picture. The MPBL odds page for Philippine basketball shows a moneyline and a spread for a sport where overtime usually settles a level game. A fight sport has its own version, covered on the UFC odds page for fight markets.

Common PK questions

Problem

The line says PK, but your sportsbook shows a price of +105 on one side and -125 on the other.

Fix

A pick’em line fixes the handicap, not the price. The two sides can still carry different prices because the sportsbook adjusts for how it expects bets to arrive. Convert both to implied chance (see the odds conversions on the pillar page) to compare them.

Problem

You backed a team on a PK line and got your stake back instead of a win.

Fix

The game ended level, which is a push on a zero handicap. No side won, so the bet is treated as no action and the stake is returned.

FAQ

What does PK mean in betting?

PK is short for pick'em. It marks a line where neither side is handicapped, so the spread is zero. Wikipedia's page on Asian handicap betting records the abbreviation as pk, for pick-em.

Is a PK line the same as a moneyline?

They look alike, because both ask who wins, but they settle differently on a tie. A PK line has a spread of zero and returns the stake on a tie, while a moneyline in a sport with a draw treats the draw as its own outcome, so a bet on either team loses.

What happens to a PK bet if the game is tied?

The bet is a push and the stake is returned. Wikipedia's Asian handicap page lists a draw on a zero handicap as a stake refund. Whether a basketball game can end level depends on whether the sportsbook settles on regular time or includes overtime, so check the rules for that sport.

Does PK mean the teams are equally likely to win?

It means the sportsbook sees the two sides as evenly matched and offers no favourite. Prices on each side usually sit close together, but each still carries the sportsbook's margin, so the two implied chances add up to more than 100%.
